When next I opened my eyes, light slipped around the edges of the shade at the window in the room attached to Brodie's office. The remnants of a fire smoldered in the coal stove, and my boots and stockings had been removed. I was still otherwise fully clothed beneath the thick blankets. It was an interesting insight to Mr. Angus Brodie. Honorable indeed. I didn't examine the reason I was disappointed.

I rose and splashed cold water on my face. Then pinned my hair up and followed the aroma of coffee into the outer office.

Coffee was on the stove bubbling away. I poured myself a cup. Biscuits and sausage sat at the desk along with an object wrapped in plain brown paper.

Upon closer inspection, I discovered that it was a knife. It had a long blade much like a hunting knife, and it was covered with what appeared to be dried blood!
